About the Upward Bound Program
The Upward Bound Program is funded by the federal government as part of the Higher Education Act of 1965. It is designed to serve individuals that are both “low income” and “first generation” high school students between the ages of 13 and 19. Currently the Upward Bound program at Florida A&M serves ninth through twelfth grade students enrolled at five schools, Wakulla High School, Godby High School, Rickards High School, East Gadsden High School and Jefferson County Middle/ High School.
Our goal is to motivate students to work hard and perform well in high school so that they can be admitted into a four year college or university. By offering tutoring sessions during the academic school year, Upward Bound seeks to strengthen and reinforce the information that is taught within the class room setting. During the summer, Upward Bound becomes a six-week residential program that offers a variety of activities which include but are not limited to: swimming, dance, weight lifting, basketball, upper level math prep and reading/writing workshops.
