Considering A Gospel Music Career?  Start here.

I love Gospel music.  I’m not just talking about the sound and the songs. Certainly I love the art and craft of Gospel music, but I also love the industry of Gospel.

For as long as I can remember I have been obsessed with the wealth of information housed within label copy and album credits. As a child I would often sit on the floor in front of my parents’ old stereo, LP covers flipped open so I could read every bit of information in the album packaging.  In the hours of reading while listening to the classic performances on those projects, I began to get a feel for the world that would eventually become both my livelihood and my calling.

It has been nearly 16 years since I was hired for my first job in the Gospel music industry.   Of all of the experiences I have been blessed to have——as an administrative assistant, production coordinator, publicist, radio promoter, A&R director and artist manager——perhaps the greatest blessing has been the opportunity to learn from some of the most talented creative and business people in the world.  Their openness in sharing their knowledge and experiences with me helped me to transform a mere series of jobs into a treasure of wisdom.

Now it’s my turn to give back.  So, if you’re considering a career in Gospel music as a creative person or industry executive, this column is for you.  Here you’ll find what you need to know to avoid mistakes and make the most of your opportunities.  From basic industry concepts to the ministry skills so necessary in Gospel music, we’ll discuss it all honestly and with an eye toward practical application.

I hope you will visit often, and by all means feel free to share your questions and feedback on our blog page.

I, too, have always loved reading liner notes!  Probably one of the primary reasons I’m not interested in downloading MP3s.
