Do You REALLY want a career in Gospel Music?
Published: September 08, 2008
The element that sets Gospel music apart from every other musical genre is not the style of performance or the choice of chords. It’s the message. That may seem obvious, but if you are interested in pursuing a career in Gospel, it’s a vital concept to embrace.

Don't Miss
For those of you who have been listening to the news or reading music industry trade magazines in recent years, it’s obvious that the music industry is in a transitional moment. Music retailers are closing their doors, CD sales have sharply declined and major record labels are downsizing their staffs and artist rosters. While it’s true that digital sales from a variety of outlets, including iTunes are on the rise, revenue from those new outlets has not been enough to make up for the loss of income from traditional music sales.
I have always believed that moments of panic for the world are moments of great opportunity for people in the Kingdom of God. Crisis has a way of forcing us to define what we believe and to commit to those beliefs with greater zeal. For those of us who work in the Gospel music industry—-artists and business people—-the financial struggles in the marketplace require us to examine our motives and define our goals in a completely new way.
What does it mean to be a musical celebrity when the outlets for touring and sponsorships are dwindling? What does it mean to be an industry mogul, when your company is struggling to turn a profit?
Such difficult questions have taken me back to the days when I first felt the Lord call me into this industry. Back then the opportunity simply to intercede for my favorite Gospel artists was something I considered an honor. The notion of actually working alongside those same people was a dream, not because of my closeness to the “limelight,” but because of the opportunity to have a real impact on people’s lives.
The climate of the marketplace may change, but the power of the message of the Gospel is stronger than ever. So, if you’re just beginning to pursue your career in Gospel music, start asking yourself the hard questions now. A career founded upon the sparkle and glitter will yield limited results. But a career that is founded upon calling and purpose will yield an impact beyond your imagination.

For a long time i’ve been in the back. God has called me to be a leader for him. I’m learning more about the business. With very breathe of my being I really want to sing for the Lord. I’m from a family of talent and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God placed me here to minister in song. I won’t stop until I am a gospel national recording artist. Pray for me that I may stay strong in the lord and that when the RIGHT opportunity arises, I will know.
