California Marriage: Don’t be Fooled

By now, many people are aware of the pivotal ballot initiative in California that would codify traditional marriage in that state’s constitution. Most of us are not aware, however, of the shamefully deceitful tactics employed by opponents of Proposition 8 specifically designed to confuse voters. Since the California Supreme Court overturned Proposition 22 in May, de-fact legalizing same-sex marriages, the far left has manipulated, deceived and misinformed the California electorate to try to get their way.

Don't Miss
Most recently, I saw bumper stickers that read, “Protect Marriage, Vote No on Proposition 8.” Yet in its original language, Proposition 8 states, “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” Homosexual activists know that the majority of voters support traditional marriage, so they are trying to trick them into voting against their own beliefs.
The madness does not stop there. In case you missed it, California’s Attorney General Democrat Jerry Brown also changed the wording on the ballot initiative to further confuse voters and presumably influence them to vote against the proposition. The wording now reads, “Proposition 8 Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry.” Brown then inserted his own editorial thoughts into the very language of the initiative, adding, “This measure could result in revenue loss, mainly from sales taxes, to state and local governments. Over the next few years, this loss could potentially total in the several tens of millions of dollars.” This sounds like a television ad not a ballot proposition.
“Never in the 50-year history of statewide ballot measures has the attorney general used an active verb like ‘eliminates’ in the title of a ballot measure,” says Jennifer Kerns of Protect Marriage. Unsurprisingly, the Los Angeles Times left out this fact in its editorial making the case that Proposition 8 will “take away” the constitutional right for homosexuals to marry. The California Constitution says nothing close to this, and that “right” in only in place as a result of judicial activism in the State Supreme Court. Let us not forget that over 61% of Californians voted to uphold traditional marriage in 2000 with Proposition 22, which is what the court overturned.
Not to be outdone, Democrat candidate Barack Obama, at Saddleback Church in front of a national television audience stated that he supported traditional marriage but forgot to reference his letter to the Alice B. Toklas Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual Democratic Club, which read:
“I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law … that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states.”
Decent people of faith and conscience must overcome this deceptive evil. Don’t be confused. Pray that Californians vote “Yes” for marriage as it has always been by voting “Yes” on Proposition 8. Let the rest of our nation watch, pray, and help in this sacred cause.
